Q:

How do I know which Content Area my activity falls under?

A:

The Content Area in which interpreters can earn CEUs are divided into two categories:

  1. Professional Studies (PS) - linguistic & cultural studies; theoretical & experiential studies; specialization studies

  2. General Studies (GS) - human service & leadership; general knowledge studies

Professional Studies contains content that directly affects the field of interpreting. A minimum of 6.0 CEUs must be completed in the PS content area by the conclusion of each 4-year CMP cycle.

Examples of PS topics:
Linguistics Culture, Theory of Interpreting, Applications of Interpreting, Interpreting Skill Development, Professional Ethics, Learning a New Language

General Studies topics enhance critical thinking skills and knowledge. There are no minimum requirements for CEUs in this category, however, only 2 CEUs will be counted toward required 8 CEUs for certification maintenance.

Examples of GS topics:
Toastmaster Program, Conference on Alzheimer’s, Karate, Gardening for the Not-So-Green Thumb

Q:

I live in a rural area where CMP sponsored activities are not convenient to attend. What can I do to maintain my RID certification?

A:

If CMP sponsored activities are not available to you, your alternate options of earning CMP CEUs are: Academic Coursework, Participant-Initiated Non-RID Activities and Independent Studies.

You can take a class, attend a non-sponsored conference or workshop, do research on a topic, analyze an article, work on a skill using videos or other designed program, or find a CD-ROM or web-based workshop.

Q:

If I want to host an activity and offer RID CMP CEUs to participants, what steps do I need to take for sponsorship?

A:

Step 1: Contact your local sponsor at cmp@tnrid.org to discuss your activity proposal/ideas.

Step 2: Complete the Continuing Education Activity webform, including presenter bio and workshop description and educational objectives.

Step 3: Mail a check to cover the sponsorship fee 45 days prior to the start date of your activity to the sponsor.

Step 4: Monitor the attendance of participants wishing to earn CEUs for the activity. Those arriving late or leaving early will not earn CEUs. Partial CEUs must be arranged for at the planning stage.

Step 5: At the conclusion of your activity have your participating RID CMP & ACET members turn in to you an activity evaluation and sign the official Activity Report Form (your TRID CMP sponsor will supply you with these). Only participants & instructors whose names & RID member #s are on the form will earn CEUs for the activity. You shoud issue a certificate of attendance for each CEU earning participant.

Step 6: Make copies of the forms & evaluations for your records. Mail the originals to your CMP sponsor no later than one month following the activity.

Q:

Why can’t I correspond with the national RID CMP administrator and send her my paperwork directly?

A:

Regional/Local CMP sponsors have been designated to handle the processing of CMP forms, advise area interpreters of the process and acceptable activities, and serve as the liaison for the national RID CMP administrator. Without these local administrators/sponsors, the one RID CMP Administrator would be inundated daily with thousands of inquiries and tons of CMP materials, slowing the turn-around time to a creep. Also, with the updated website, much of the "paperwork" to RID is no longer done by paper and instead requires a user account on the new website to submit and manage activities.
