RID ACET

Since July 1, 1994, the RID Certification Maintenance Program (CMP) has served as a way for interpreters to "maintain their skill levels and keep up with developments in the interpreting field" through life-long learning.

Interpreters participate in educational activities to earn continuing education units (CEUs) during their cycle. The CEU is an international standard wherein 10 contact hours equals 1 CEU.

Each cycle is 4 years long, during which the interpreter must earn 8 CEUs. Six (6) CEUs must be in the area of Professional Studies. If the interpreter also maintains a speciality certificate, 2 of the 6 CEUs in Professional Studies must be in their field of specialization. CEUs may also be earned in the area of General Studies, however only 2 CEUs will count toward certification maintenance.

In order to facilitate the operation of the program, RID Approved Sponsors across the country evaluate and approve different educational activities. We are fortunate enough to have TRID as one of these sponsors.

Ways to earn Continuing Education Units:

1. Sponsor Initiated Activities:
workshops, short courses, conferences, silent weekends, CD ROM Workshop, etc.

2. Participant Initiated Activities:
in-service workshops, workshops or conferences of other organizations, etc.

3. Academic Coursework Activities:
any classes taken at an accredited college or university for which you earned a grade of C or above

4. Independent Study Activities:
home study with videos, research or literature reviews, study groups, acting as a mentor or being mentored, curriculum/workshop development, teaching a workshop for the first time, etc.
